00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:40.000
Katherine Autin: Hi, everyone! I'm Katherine Autin, and this is Visionary Caregivers Show with Katherine Autin.
00:06:41.000 --> 00:06:45.000
Katherine Autin: I'm a Parkinson's expert and a board certified patient advocate.
00:06:46.000 --> 00:06:48.000
Katherine Autin: My husband, David, was diagnosed.
00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:55.000
Katherine Autin: In 2004, and it's still 20 plus years, because we're now in 2025.
00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:58.000
Katherine Autin: This is episode 4.
00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:04.000
Katherine Autin: And I'm really excited because I have a guest today that I've been connecting with for a few years.
00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:07.000
Katherine Autin: His name is Jose Julio Delgado.
00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:13.000
Katherine Autin: He's from Chile. He's an American citizen. You've been here 34 years.
00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:22.000
Katherine Autin: Which is wonderful. And so I wanted to tell. Let him tell his story. But I had some specific things I wanted to focus on.
00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:28.000
Katherine Autin: Because he is very inspirational and proactive with his Parkinson's.
00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:34.000
Katherine Autin: And a lot of people really just kind of let things happen to them. He is not one of those.
00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:37.000
Katherine Autin: So I'm very excited to introduce Jose.
00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:42.000
Katherine Autin: To let him tell his story, and to find out a little bit about.
00:07:42.000 --> 00:07:45.000
Katherine Autin: Some of the things that he has done to help others.
00:07:45.000 --> 00:07:47.000
Katherine Autin: The key. Here.
00:07:48.000 --> 00:07:54.000
Katherine Autin: Is, Jose started a Parkinson support group online.
00:07:54.000 --> 00:07:57.000
Katherine Autin: To connect people, help to educate them.
00:07:57.000 --> 00:08:03.000
Katherine Autin: And to let them tell their stories and ask questions that nobody ever really talks about.
00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:05.000
Jose Delgado: Hmm.
00:08:03.000 --> 00:08:06.000
Katherine Autin: So, Jose, take it away. Welcome.
00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:10.000
Jose Delgado: Thank you. Thank you, Katharine, for the invitation. Really appreciate that.
00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:16.000
Jose Delgado: Parkinson's awareness is really important. I think we are Parkinson's awareness. We are the one we need to go up and talk.
00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:24.000
Jose Delgado: Really appreciate that. Thank you. Uh, well, and everything was fine, beautiful life, right with la vida loca. Everything fine.
00:08:24.000 --> 00:08:32.000
Jose Delgado: And then someday things happen, you know. Hand right, everybody so. And then Parkinson's disease. It doesn't.
00:08:32.000 --> 00:08:34.000
Jose Delgado: 8, so.
00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:38.000
Jose Delgado: When the doctors say Parkinson's disease.
00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:41.000
Jose Delgado: What is coming in. My, my folks.
00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:43.000
Jose Delgado: Muhammad Ali.
00:08:43.000 --> 00:08:45.000
Jose Delgado: Vision that I know about Parkinson's.
00:08:45.000 --> 00:08:56.000
Jose Delgado: This is so, I think I need to know more about Parkinson's. But I know about Parkinson's what the doctor says, what the science say about what people say with Parkinson's.
00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:02.000
Jose Delgado: So as I, just I in many groups, Facebook, and they keep me out because they're not agree with my question.
00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:06.000
Jose Delgado: So one day my pastor was in my house.
00:09:06.000 --> 00:09:09.000
Jose Delgado: And then I had a conversation about it. He said to me.
00:09:09.000 --> 00:09:11.000
Jose Delgado: Why don't you create your own group.
00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:16.000
Jose Delgado: You are the boss.
00:09:14.000 --> 00:09:18.000
Katherine Autin: Wow! Jose, that what an awesome thing!
00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:20.000
Jose Delgado: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:22.000
Katherine Autin: You just throw that out there. Why don't you start your own group.
00:09:22.000 --> 00:09:28.000
Jose Delgado: You are the boss, you are the boss, and then you can ask any questions you want, and then you can do whatever you want. Perfect.
00:09:28.000 --> 00:09:33.000
Jose Delgado: So in the beginning it wasn't like that's fine, you know, in Parkinson's being changed. My life.
00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:37.000
Jose Delgado: Forever. In the beginning I was upset with the.
00:09:37.000 --> 00:09:42.000
Jose Delgado: And I'm really a strong believer. I remember my brain.
00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:50.000
Jose Delgado: I remember asking God, and I say, if you're going to need me, wake me up, you don't need me. Let me sleep right. He waked me up so he didn't need me work a lot.
00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:52.000
Jose Delgado: So anyways.
00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:57.000
Jose Delgado: So I create my my own group. I call um.
00:09:57.000 --> 00:10:00.000
Jose Delgado: Living with Parkinson. Daily Life.
00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:02.000
Jose Delgado: You know when you say life.
00:10:03.000 --> 00:10:05.000
Jose Delgado: Because my idea is.
00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:07.000
Jose Delgado: People show videos like this. Right.
00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:10.000
Jose Delgado: About what they do.
00:10:10.000 --> 00:10:12.000
Jose Delgado: How they do, how they live in it is a.
00:10:12.000 --> 00:10:14.000
Jose Delgado: So.
00:10:15.000 --> 00:10:18.000
Jose Delgado: In the beginning was exciting.
00:10:18.000 --> 00:10:21.000
Jose Delgado: 10, member, 3 4, member, 5, team, member.
00:10:21.000 --> 00:10:29.000
Jose Delgado: 100 member, 200 300 400. We have 900 member right now, 9, 9, or 6 member in this group.
00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:31.000
Jose Delgado: Thank you.
00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:32.000
Katherine Autin: That's awesome. I'm so excited for you.
00:10:32.000 --> 00:10:43.000
Jose Delgado: Is it international group we have members for around the world, for you have no idea. I have found people in Philippines, Australian, Denmark, Iceland.
00:10:43.000 --> 00:10:51.000
Jose Delgado: South America. I had no idea. I have more than 200 different countries in my group. People with Parkinson's.
00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:53.000
Jose Delgado: How did I find in? I don't know.
00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:57.000
Jose Delgado: I don't know. I think I got my connection.
00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:56.000
Katherine Autin: The question.
00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:59.000
Katherine Autin: But the question is, Jose, how did they find you.
00:10:59.000 --> 00:11:03.000
Katherine Autin: You know you found them. But how did they find you?
00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:06.000
Katherine Autin: Um. I'm guessing, because you were connected with other groups that.
00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:09.000
Katherine Autin: Because that's how I found you through another group.
00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:12.000
Katherine Autin: That's how I learned about your group.
00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:12.000
Jose Delgado: Yes.
00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:18.000
Jose Delgado: Yes. Well, you learn you. You meet me in the same way, right? You. You know about me because because of the group.
00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:20.000
Jose Delgado: Um.
00:11:18.000 --> 00:11:20.000
Katherine Autin: Mhm.
00:11:20.000 --> 00:11:22.000
Jose Delgado: So.
00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:31.000
Jose Delgado: So I started looking for people with Parkinson's right, and then I invite them. Come to. I call them. Come out the closet, I said comedy closet. All right.
00:11:31.000 --> 00:11:39.000
Jose Delgado: Show your face. Show what you do. You are not a Muslim, you're not a Liberal, you are a human being with a different lifestyle.
00:11:39.000 --> 00:11:45.000
Jose Delgado: Parkinson's disease is not a disease. You shouldn't remove the disease, or after Parkinson's.
00:11:45.000 --> 00:11:53.000
Jose Delgado: You, said Parkinson's is a lifestyle. You're going to live in a different way, even though you're going to live in a better way than before. Katharine, I live better way than before.
00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:58.000
Jose Delgado: So I'm so happy and regret I had Parkinson's before. I will have better life before.
00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:08.000
Jose Delgado: So. So, yeah, so my, my 1st regulation for this group was respite. That's it. You only have only one.
00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:10.000
Jose Delgado: And route, which is respite.
00:12:11.000 --> 00:12:18.000
Jose Delgado: I want to have a group when people leave the living cure. Parkinson's because.
00:12:18.000 --> 00:12:27.000
Jose Delgado: They drink water. People don't believe in that if they don't want to, but I want people to spread that opinion. I don't want to engage with nobody engaged in my group.
00:12:27.000 --> 00:12:30.000
Jose Delgado: No engagement, no, no, no contradiction.
00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:37.000
Jose Delgado: So. And then I'm looking for people around the world, and they're not alone. My message was, you're not alone. We need you.
00:12:37.000 --> 00:12:41.000
Jose Delgado: Show the people right? We are normal people.
00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:44.000
Jose Delgado: Where we are the normal. So who is the normal? Who's the normal right.
00:12:44.000 --> 00:12:54.000
Jose Delgado: So, yeah, so we have a great activities in the group. Every Tuesday we do a step by step, which is, we will every Tuesday we'll go for a walk.
00:12:55.000 --> 00:12:58.000
Jose Delgado: And they send me the step. How many steps they did at the time.
00:12:59.000 --> 00:13:05.000
Jose Delgado: So we have great athletes in Europe. Right? They world. They walk like 20,000 steps in one day.
00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:10.000
Jose Delgado: And maybe we work like 300 or faster one day. So do you consider.
00:13:10.000 --> 00:13:12.000
Jose Delgado: Africa.
00:13:11.000 --> 00:13:15.000
Katherine Autin: But that's but you're inspiring them to actually do that.
00:13:15.000 --> 00:13:21.000
Katherine Autin: And I get your messages, and I'm like, Well, I don't do that, but I know that it is something that.
00:13:21.000 --> 00:13:25.000
Katherine Autin: Can make a huge difference when you're living with Parkinson's.
00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:30.000
Katherine Autin: To keep moving. You've got to keep moving, and walking is really good for you.
00:13:31.000 --> 00:13:33.000
Jose Delgado: What you bring my heart. Kathy is um.
00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:37.000
Jose Delgado: When somebody from Mexico, somebody from Africa, somebody from.
00:13:37.000 --> 00:13:44.000
Jose Delgado: For Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia. Right. They write to me. They say I am in the hospital.
00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:46.000
Jose Delgado: I cannot walk, I cannot move.
00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:52.000
Jose Delgado: But, Jose, every Tuesday my nurse gave me out. Get out of the bed, and do at least a step for you.
00:13:52.000 --> 00:13:56.000
Jose Delgado: That bring my heart so that's like a how can I? I didn't.
00:13:55.000 --> 00:13:58.000
Katherine Autin: Wonderful! That's.
00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:59.000
Jose Delgado: How can I stop you? I need to continue.
00:13:58.000 --> 00:14:01.000
Katherine Autin: That just fill you up with love.
00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:17.000
Katherine Autin: That's you, and you are inspiring the world of Parkinson's, and not just them, but the caregivers, too, because you do have caregivers that come on your group, too, and that's, I think what's really helpful is.
00:14:03.000 --> 00:14:05.000
Jose Delgado: It's the.
00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:29.000
Katherine Autin: The caregivers hear the stories of the other folks with Parkinson's, and then the folks with Parkinson's hear the stories about the caregivers, and it's a very important combination.
00:14:29.000 --> 00:14:32.000
Katherine Autin: Of information that can help them.
00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:37.000
Katherine Autin: In their daily lives to understand how each other is doing.
00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:45.000
Jose Delgado: Yes, it is. I think I always send the message that you're gonna be a time when we are able to do many things.
00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:51.000
Jose Delgado: Move, working right when I had a time when you cannot do anything right? So it happened to me. So you're gonna have a time when you have time, when you need.
00:14:49.000 --> 00:14:53.000
Katherine Autin: Right? Yeah. You was it you broke your your wrist or your hand?
00:14:52.000 --> 00:14:56.000
Jose Delgado: Yeah, my my reason, my.
00:14:56.000 --> 00:14:59.000
Jose Delgado: We have some bones over here by by the fingers right here.
00:14:59.000 --> 00:15:01.000
Jose Delgado: Got some bones.
00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:02.000
Katherine Autin: Mhm.
00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:04.000
Jose Delgado: So these little bones, these are the place.
00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:06.000
Katherine Autin: Oh, I see. Okay.
00:15:07.000 --> 00:15:11.000
Katherine Autin: For for those who can't see, because we're not on video right now.
00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:12.000
Jose Delgado: Okay. Uh, oh.
00:15:11.000 --> 00:15:16.000
Katherine Autin: Um! He! He broke the small bones just near his.
00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:19.000
Katherine Autin: Thumb and his forefinger.
00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:23.000
Katherine Autin: And so he's in a pink cast.
00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:25.000
Katherine Autin: I love the color.
00:15:23.000 --> 00:15:25.000
Jose Delgado: And right now.
00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:28.000
Jose Delgado: Right over my my grand, my grandchildren.
00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:30.000
Jose Delgado: Any of my friends.
00:15:29.000 --> 00:15:32.000
Katherine Autin: Oh, okay, so. And people have written on his cast. So.
00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:35.000
Jose Delgado: We're real men, real men wear pink color. So.
00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:37.000
Katherine Autin: Right.
00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:37.000
Jose Delgado: That what it is is.
00:15:37.000 --> 00:15:46.000
Jose Delgado: So. So I, looking for people around the world. And and then they find another another group of grass so fast that at 1 point it was. It's a lot.
00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:57.000
Jose Delgado: So our second activity that we're talking about step by step. So we count the step. We put it in a list. We show the country with the flag and the name of the person. How many steps they did.
00:15:47.000 --> 00:15:49.000
Katherine Autin: Right.
00:15:57.000 --> 00:16:02.000
Jose Delgado: But this person give me the lesson that it's not so matter how minister you did.
00:16:02.000 --> 00:16:07.000
Jose Delgado: For me one step is equal to a million steps.
00:16:07.000 --> 00:16:10.000
Jose Delgado: The same value, same balloon, same value.
00:16:07.000 --> 00:16:09.000
Katherine Autin: Yes.
00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:13.000
Katherine Autin: That's it. If you can do one or 2 steps rather than none.
00:16:14.000 --> 00:16:16.000
Katherine Autin: It makes a huge difference.
00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:23.000
Katherine Autin: So I want to kind of switch things a little bit, because I wanted to know a little bit about you yourself.
00:16:23.000 --> 00:16:26.000
Katherine Autin: As a person with Parkinson's living with Parkinson's.
00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:30.000
Katherine Autin: I know I've helped hundreds of people with Parkinson's all different.
00:16:30.000 --> 00:16:35.000
Katherine Autin: Variations, different symptoms, you know, over the 20 years I've been helping.
00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:42.000
Katherine Autin: And I think one of the things I always ask people is, what is the most difficult symptom for you right now.
00:16:42.000 --> 00:16:44.000
Katherine Autin: That you have found a way to deal with.
00:16:45.000 --> 00:16:47.000
Jose Delgado: I think. Ah! The symptom.
00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:53.000
Jose Delgado: The record symptom is accepted. You have Parkinson.
00:16:53.000 --> 00:16:56.000
Jose Delgado: Think when you accept that you have Parkinson's, or you like sharing for the room.
00:16:56.000 --> 00:17:09.000
Jose Delgado: When you not said that you have Parkinson's, you are in the dilemma that yes, no, I can, I cannot do it. And the depression. Bro, you, you know that you have Parkinson's. There's no way you can move, you know, so you can move.
00:16:57.000 --> 00:16:59.000
Katherine Autin: Right.
00:17:09.000 --> 00:17:13.000
Jose Delgado: So right now, dealing with stiffness. My pitch also really.
00:17:13.000 --> 00:17:17.000
Jose Delgado: Complicated and French Chile.
00:17:20.000 --> 00:17:24.000
Jose Delgado: Chileans Talking Fast.
00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:28.000
Jose Delgado: With Parkinson trade English, Está en eso. Idio.
00:17:27.000 --> 00:17:32.000
Katherine Autin: It gets a little hard. I know we may have some folks who are listening to this going.
00:17:32.000 --> 00:17:34.000
Jose Delgado: Ya.
00:17:33.000 --> 00:17:41.000
Katherine Autin: I'm not sure I know what he's saying, but I heard that word. So you know they're understanding some of what you're saying, but it's still, it's still gonna hit.
00:17:41.000 --> 00:17:48.000
Jose Delgado: No, no.
00:17:41.000 --> 00:17:43.000
Katherine Autin: So.
00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:46.000
Katherine Autin: Right.
00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:57.000
Katherine Autin: But that's not your habit, that's not your culture. And so that makes it harder, especially with Parkinson's. It's hard for you to speak and think at the same time right?
00:17:50.000 --> 00:17:52.000
Jose Delgado: Nada de sable.
00:17:57.000 --> 00:17:59.000
Jose Delgado: Ya.
00:17:58.000 --> 00:18:00.000
Katherine Autin: Yeah, so.
00:17:59.000 --> 00:18:01.000
Jose Delgado: Ya.
00:18:01.000 --> 00:18:04.000
Katherine Autin: Um, so I guess one of the questions I had was.
00:18:04.000 --> 00:18:07.000
Katherine Autin: Um. You had a tremor before. Correct.
00:18:06.000 --> 00:18:09.000
Jose Delgado: Yes Yess and.
00:18:08.000 --> 00:18:14.000
Katherine Autin: And recently, like I don't remember when. But you had deep brain stimulation surgery. When was that?
00:18:14.000 --> 00:18:16.000
Jose Delgado: Yes it yes.
00:18:16.000 --> 00:18:18.000
Jose Delgado: Um.
00:18:18.000 --> 00:18:20.000
Katherine Autin: Was it a year ago.
00:18:20.000 --> 00:18:23.000
Jose Delgado: No, that was uh 5 5 years ago.
00:18:23.000 --> 00:18:25.000
Katherine Autin: 5 years ago. Okay, I thought it was.
00:18:27.000 --> 00:18:29.000
Katherine Autin: You're remote. Yeah.
00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:32.000
Jose Delgado: So I can play. You know. I can play lower, high, lower, low, high, so.
00:18:32.000 --> 00:18:35.000
Jose Delgado: If I'm 30.
00:18:33.000 --> 00:18:41.000
Katherine Autin: So the deep brain stimulation, surgery. I'm not going to explain it on here, because I will have somebody talk about that in one of my other podcasts.
00:18:42.000 --> 00:18:45.000
Katherine Autin: But it really is something that can help folks with Parkinson's.
00:18:46.000 --> 00:18:52.000
Katherine Autin: After you had your surgery, how did you find that it changed your life, your lifestyle.
00:18:52.000 --> 00:18:56.000
Katherine Autin: Did it? Did it take away your tremors? Did it make them better.
00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:59.000
Jose Delgado: Yes.
00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:59.000
Katherine Autin: And are you on any medication.
00:19:00.000 --> 00:19:02.000
Jose Delgado: Yes, um.
00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:11.000
Jose Delgado: 1st of all, I we need to educate ourselves, because if we don't educate ourselves, we don't know what we're talking about.
00:19:11.000 --> 00:19:23.000
Jose Delgado: So it took me one year to do my own research to find out what it is, because people say yes or no, even somebody say, don't watch any more videos than online. You're going to be scared. It's true. You're going to be scared online watching those videos right?
00:19:23.000 --> 00:19:25.000
Jose Delgado: And a creepy, you know. Horror movies.
00:19:25.000 --> 00:19:35.000
Jose Delgado: So I decided what, after one year, I decide to have the the Dvs stimulation. Cj, because my my hand was like this.
00:19:35.000 --> 00:19:37.000
Katherine Autin: Mhm, shaking.
00:19:35.000 --> 00:19:37.000
Jose Delgado: In a way like this.
00:19:37.000 --> 00:19:41.000
Katherine Autin: Yeah, you were moving around. Did you have dyskinesia, or was it just.
00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:40.000
Jose Delgado: Please, ginger.
00:19:41.000 --> 00:19:43.000
Katherine Autin: The tremor.
00:19:42.000 --> 00:19:44.000
Jose Delgado: Chemo. And this connection.
00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:50.000
Katherine Autin: Both. So the Dyskinesia, for those who are listening is caused by the medication.
00:19:45.000 --> 00:19:47.000
Jose Delgado: But.
00:19:50.000 --> 00:19:59.000
Katherine Autin: The tremor is something different. It's a lot of people with Parkinson's have a tremor, but not everyone with Parkinson's has a tremor. My husband does not.
00:19:50.000 --> 00:19:52.000
Jose Delgado: I'm getting.
00:19:59.000 --> 00:20:05.000
Katherine Autin: And that's why it took so long for him to be diagnosed. It took my husband over 3 years to get a diagnosis.
00:19:59.000 --> 00:20:01.000
Jose Delgado: Yeah.
00:20:05.000 --> 00:20:09.000
Katherine Autin: Because they kept saying, No, no, no, it's not, it's not. It's not.
00:20:09.000 --> 00:20:11.000
Jose Delgado: So.
00:20:09.000 --> 00:20:15.000
Katherine Autin: But that's 1 of the things. So with the Dbs, you're not flailing your arms around anymore.
00:20:12.000 --> 00:20:14.000
Jose Delgado: Yes.
00:20:14.000 --> 00:20:19.000
Jose Delgado: No, I don't. You can see, Kathy. You can see a setup.
00:20:17.000 --> 00:20:20.000
Katherine Autin: Yeah. You're steady, totally steady.
00:20:20.000 --> 00:20:22.000
Katherine Autin: Awesome.
00:20:23.000 --> 00:20:32.000
Jose Delgado: Change my life forever. The thing is that people need to. People are scared about the years really scared about the year, because it's a.
00:20:32.000 --> 00:20:35.000
Katherine Autin: Yeah, what's a surgery?
00:20:32.000 --> 00:20:36.000
Jose Delgado: It is a. It's a painful laundry going.
00:20:35.000 --> 00:20:42.000
Katherine Autin: It's a surgery. It's not just, you know. Hey? I'm going to take a pill. This is actually a brain surgery.
00:20:40.000 --> 00:20:53.000
Jose Delgado: Well for me. I was. I have video before the the city that was so calm it was so relaxing that day. My family was my family was scared family, was it just? I was so happy with the city.
00:20:53.000 --> 00:21:02.000
Jose Delgado: But, um, you need to believe. You need to trust. You need to believe that I believe in science. I believe in whatever God created right. So I believe everything is good for you.
00:21:02.000 --> 00:21:14.000
Jose Delgado: So, yeah, I did the security. So you can see no tremors and happy to do and no regret. Yeah, I recommend people do the security now, because they're gonna be late.
00:21:14.000 --> 00:21:18.000
Katherine Autin: So did you have the deep brain stimulation, surgery on both sides.
00:21:18.000 --> 00:21:20.000
Jose Delgado: Yes, both sides.
00:21:19.000 --> 00:21:26.000
Katherine Autin: Of your brain. Okay? Because some people for those who are listening, some people only have it on one side of their brain.
00:21:20.000 --> 00:21:22.000
Jose Delgado: Did they put.
00:21:25.000 --> 00:21:27.000
Jose Delgado: Yeah.
00:21:26.000 --> 00:21:30.000
Katherine Autin: And then maybe they might have it. Another time they'll get the second side done.
00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:34.000
Katherine Autin: It all depends on where they believe your.
00:21:34.000 --> 00:21:36.000
Katherine Autin: Main symptoms are coming from.
00:21:37.000 --> 00:21:46.000
Katherine Autin: And I think that's 1 of the things that everybody has to decide but the deep brain stimulation. I've known hundreds of people with deep brain stimulation, surgery.
00:21:46.000 --> 00:21:50.000
Katherine Autin: And most people really are very glad that they've had it done.
00:21:50.000 --> 00:21:52.000
Katherine Autin: But it is not appropriate for everyone.
00:21:52.000 --> 00:21:56.000
Katherine Autin: And that's something that's very disconcerting.
00:21:52.000 --> 00:21:54.000
Jose Delgado: No.
00:21:57.000 --> 00:22:00.000
Katherine Autin: For folks with Parkinson's who go for a.
00:22:00.000 --> 00:22:03.000
Katherine Autin: They want to get the Dbs. But the doctor says.
00:22:03.000 --> 00:22:07.000
Katherine Autin: If you have too much cognitive issue right now.
00:22:07.000 --> 00:22:11.000
Katherine Autin: The Dbs could make it worse, and so they very often.
00:22:11.000 --> 00:22:13.000
Katherine Autin: After they've assessed you.
00:22:14.000 --> 00:22:18.000
Katherine Autin: Will say I'm sorry you're not a good candidate, and that's disappointing.
00:22:18.000 --> 00:22:23.000
Katherine Autin: But to look ahead and realize, even if you can't have Dbs.
00:22:23.000 --> 00:22:26.000
Katherine Autin: There are other things out there to help you.
00:22:26.000 --> 00:22:30.000
Jose Delgado: Yes, unfortunately, Kathy, I like to.
00:22:30.000 --> 00:22:32.000
Jose Delgado: Say the deed in the way it is.
00:22:32.000 --> 00:22:40.000
Jose Delgado: I've been a study, Parkinson, over the last 14 years. I dedicate to study. You know I have my Zoom Meeting, which should be a speaker to in the group.
00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:45.000
Jose Delgado: So you have to speak around people around the world. Unfortunately, in.
00:22:40.000 --> 00:22:42.000
Katherine Autin: Yes.
00:22:46.000 --> 00:22:50.000
Jose Delgado: If you have Parkinson's disease right, you're going to have Parkinson's disease in your body.
00:22:50.000 --> 00:22:55.000
Jose Delgado: You don't need to do half one half later. It's just wasting time wasting time.
00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:57.000
Jose Delgado: It creates pain in the patient.
00:22:57.000 --> 00:23:05.000
Jose Delgado: Unfortunately, insurance can a lot over here? I got to say this because it's a business, you know we are. We are a business. So you're looking at as a business.
00:23:04.000 --> 00:23:08.000
Katherine Autin: It's a it is a business, but it's also dependent on your surgeon.
00:23:08.000 --> 00:23:13.000
Katherine Autin: Your neurosurgeon who's going to do the surgery decides whether or not.
00:23:13.000 --> 00:23:19.000
Katherine Autin: You are a good candidate for one side of the brain to be done, or the second side.
00:23:18.000 --> 00:23:20.000
Jose Delgado: Yeah.
00:23:19.000 --> 00:23:23.000
Katherine Autin: And that's not something that you can decide, because you're not a neurosurgeon.
00:23:23.000 --> 00:23:26.000
Jose Delgado: No, no, I don't know. Yeah, I mean with you. But um.
00:23:26.000 --> 00:23:32.000
Jose Delgado: And and they're kind of disappointed when when somebody like 70 years 80 years old has the CEO right? And then.
00:23:32.000 --> 00:23:36.000
Jose Delgado: 3, 4 months later they need to go one more time for the same, saying, trauma.
00:23:36.000 --> 00:23:41.000
Jose Delgado: To me. They put me asleep 7 in the morning. They wake me up for 5 PM.
00:23:41.000 --> 00:23:44.000
Jose Delgado: Everything went, done, no problem, everyone.
00:23:42.000 --> 00:23:44.000
Katherine Autin: Right.
00:23:44.000 --> 00:23:49.000
Jose Delgado: So Dbs is A is a great, great solution. It's a great tool.
00:23:49.000 --> 00:23:52.000
Jose Delgado: They were getting used, and they're going to change your life forever.
00:23:52.000 --> 00:23:59.000
Jose Delgado: 5%. 5% of the people change the ideas that disappointing only 5%, 95%. That point. With this.
00:23:59.000 --> 00:24:08.000
Katherine Autin: Right, and thank you for sharing this story, because not many people really know about it. So how long after you had the surgery? Did you feel like you were.
00:24:04.000 --> 00:24:06.000
Jose Delgado: Yeah.
00:24:09.000 --> 00:24:23.000
Katherine Autin: Moving around more care without the tremor, without the issue, because it sometimes takes a while for the brain swelling to heal and kind of bring you back to what you consider more normal.
00:24:23.000 --> 00:24:29.000
Jose Delgado: I wish uh, I can show you some video. Maybe I can show you the video later. Another, another invitation.
00:24:29.000 --> 00:24:35.000
Jose Delgado: You know. So I have video before they turn around the the deviation.
00:24:35.000 --> 00:24:37.000
Katherine Autin: Right.
00:24:35.000 --> 00:24:42.000
Jose Delgado: So you can see me. How working you can see me, how I was without the the views.
00:24:42.000 --> 00:24:46.000
Jose Delgado: Then you will see how they turn around the TV. How my! My body changed early.
00:24:46.000 --> 00:24:55.000
Jose Delgado: So it's 2 2 different movies. You will see at the same time in my body. So it's amazing. It take right away right away. 30 min.
00:24:51.000 --> 00:24:53.000
Katherine Autin: Right.
00:24:55.000 --> 00:25:07.000
Jose Delgado: It took them. The doctor Internet started working and then set up the setting. It came on a long time. We need to be patient, so find the the right setting. Take probably like 1, 2 year, find the right setting.
00:25:07.000 --> 00:25:09.000
Jose Delgado: So. But after you find the right setting.
00:25:08.000 --> 00:25:12.000
Katherine Autin: Right. That's what I was asking like, because you have to adjust it.
00:25:12.000 --> 00:25:14.000
Jose Delgado: Yes.
00:25:13.000 --> 00:25:21.000
Katherine Autin: To what the electrodes are doing in the brain. It takes a while. For 1st of all, the brain has to stop swelling from the surgery.
00:25:20.000 --> 00:25:22.000
Jose Delgado: There you go!
00:25:21.000 --> 00:25:25.000
Katherine Autin: And then the brain has to adjust to. It's got an electrode in it.
00:25:25.000 --> 00:25:30.000
Katherine Autin: But finding that sweet spot where you're more comfortable, I know it can take some time.
00:25:30.000 --> 00:25:35.000
Katherine Autin: That's why I asked you, because some people think right afterwards they're going to jump up and.
00:25:33.000 --> 00:25:35.000
Jose Delgado: Yeah.
00:25:35.000 --> 00:25:42.000
Katherine Autin: I don't want to give people the wrong impression that right after your surgery you're going to be. Oh, you don't have it anymore.
00:25:37.000 --> 00:25:39.000
Jose Delgado: No, I don't know.
00:25:41.000 --> 00:25:46.000
Jose Delgado: Elimination ticket is really important.
00:25:47.000 --> 00:25:51.000
Jose Delgado: They need to be a hundred percent sure. What Dvs for.
00:25:51.000 --> 00:25:56.000
Jose Delgado: What if you're going to change the body? Because people they go totally with no information.
00:25:56.000 --> 00:26:08.000
Jose Delgado: People believe that Dv is going to change your financial situation. People believe going to change your status. Probably your marriage. Probably no TV is going to feed you, you tray more. Maybe you're stiffen it. That's it done. That's it. No more.
00:26:08.000 --> 00:26:10.000
Jose Delgado: Didn't even know yet now.
00:26:09.000 --> 00:26:11.000
Katherine Autin: Right? That's right.
00:26:11.000 --> 00:26:13.000
Jose Delgado: Now um.
00:26:13.000 --> 00:26:27.000
Jose Delgado: In the meantime, Pakistan continued, progressing, right? So things change, things change. So I've been so grateful. I've been so glad friends around the world had you. I miss wonderful people around the world. So I'm so happy for Paris, honestly, really happy.
00:26:28.000 --> 00:26:48.000
Katherine Autin: Well, I have to say, Jose, I'm inspired by you from the minute that I met you, and then connected with your group, and when I can. I do get on the group. Do you want to tell the audience that's listening, how they can connect if they have Parkinson's? Or if they're a caregiver, or is it open to people who just want to learn about Parkinson's.
00:26:48.000 --> 00:26:53.000
Jose Delgado: And the group. I am the only one, actually, that who accept people.
00:26:53.000 --> 00:26:55.000
Jose Delgado: And when they review the backgrounds.
00:26:55.000 --> 00:26:58.000
Jose Delgado: So basically, you can have bargain zone.
00:26:58.000 --> 00:27:05.000
Jose Delgado: You have family. With Parkinson's you can be associated with Parkinson's. We have a lot of caregivers, a lot of caregivers.
00:27:05.000 --> 00:27:07.000
Katherine Autin: Yes.
00:27:16.000 --> 00:27:21.000
Jose Delgado: El Really Amazon. Vivo Amazon, bebe.
00:27:19.000 --> 00:27:21.000
Katherine Autin: Mhm.
00:27:21.000 --> 00:27:25.000
Katherine Autin: Well, caregivers really have to be. It's got to be a team effort.
00:27:25.000 --> 00:27:29.000
Katherine Autin: So do you have a team that supports you, family or friends.
00:27:29.000 --> 00:27:37.000
Jose Delgado: Aquí en tym my choeste.
00:27:37.000 --> 00:27:40.000
Jose Delgado: No hay. No les era Iker. Wash: My Friends.
00:27:39.000 --> 00:27:44.000
Katherine Autin: Once, once your once your break is healed, you'll be able to tie your shoes. Correct.
00:27:43.000 --> 00:27:49.000
Jose Delgado: Y es y es y es evidentemente define lic to find we time.
00:27:49.000 --> 00:27:53.000
Jose Delgado: Looking forward. Who is gonna take care of myself because I definitely.
00:27:53.000 --> 00:27:58.000
Jose Delgado: Um. You don't you? Don't. You don't wanna give your family some extra, or you know, sometime.
00:27:58.000 --> 00:28:02.000
Jose Delgado: So you can. You can make everybody's life more easy. So, and I think caregivers.
00:27:58.000 --> 00:28:00.000
Katherine Autin: Right.
00:28:02.000 --> 00:28:13.000
Jose Delgado: I have a lot of group, my group, and then I have participation. Another group and caregiver is another puzzle, another piece of the puzzle.
00:28:13.000 --> 00:28:15.000
Jose Delgado: We need it.
00:28:14.000 --> 00:28:27.000
Katherine Autin: It is, and I think it's something we really one of the things that I work on is I have a new initiative. My company is Parkinson. Partners, and people can go to parkinsonpartners.com to learn more about me, but.
00:28:27.000 --> 00:28:33.000
Katherine Autin: My new initiative, Visionary Caregivers is, I want to train caregivers how to be patient advocates.
00:28:33.000 --> 00:28:37.000
Katherine Autin: Not just for themselves, but for their loved ones.
00:28:37.000 --> 00:28:40.000
Katherine Autin: Because if a caregiver does not do well.
00:28:40.000 --> 00:28:44.000
Katherine Autin: The loved one they're taking care of does not do well.
00:28:44.000 --> 00:28:46.000
Jose Delgado: No.
00:28:44.000 --> 00:28:54.000
Katherine Autin: It's really, that's 1 of the things most people don't realize is you can be a caregiver. But the stress can kill you physically and emotionally.
00:28:54.000 --> 00:28:57.000
Katherine Autin: So you have to be able to take care of yourself.
00:28:57.000 --> 00:29:03.000
Katherine Autin: So patient. I'm a board certified, patient advocate, and I've helped many people through these journeys.
00:29:03.000 --> 00:29:19.000
Katherine Autin: But you have to know how to talk to your doctors. You have to know how to prepare for doctor's appointments. You have to know how to work with the hospitals. I mean, that's 1 of the worst things is, if you have, Parkinson's going in the hospital is like, Yeah, I don't know. That's not a great idea.
00:29:06.000 --> 00:29:08.000
Jose Delgado: Yes.
00:29:17.000 --> 00:29:19.000
Jose Delgado: Yes.
00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:21.000
Jose Delgado: Yeah.
00:29:19.000 --> 00:29:24.000
Katherine Autin: But it's also just learning. Some of the skill sets.
00:29:24.000 --> 00:29:28.000
Katherine Autin: To be able to know when to ask the right questions.
00:29:28.000 --> 00:29:31.000
Katherine Autin: So I have a training that I'm offering. It's called the.
00:29:31.000 --> 00:29:37.000
Katherine Autin: Um patient advocate training for caregivers. And it's actually starting on February 10.th
00:29:37.000 --> 00:29:45.000
Katherine Autin: It's going to be online. And it's up on my Facebook page. Parkinson partners and Catherine J. Otan.
00:29:45.000 --> 00:29:47.000
Katherine Autin: But I really wanted to.
00:29:47.000 --> 00:29:50.000
Katherine Autin: Thank you so much for coming, and I know you have another.
00:29:50.000 --> 00:29:54.000
Katherine Autin: A group that you run. I think you said on Sundays you do something live.
00:29:54.000 --> 00:30:01.000
Jose Delgado: Yes, uh, with this group, because we have group around the world. Right? So we have friends in England.
00:30:01.000 --> 00:30:04.000
Jose Delgado: In Scotland, basically.
00:30:04.000 --> 00:30:11.000
Jose Delgado: So they have our Internet ready. Right? So we had a lot of Christian people in the in the in the group, so they don't know. They don't have access to.
00:30:11.000 --> 00:30:21.000
Jose Delgado: To be connected to with live. So, anyway. So I don't know how things work here. God play with us. I don't know how.
00:30:21.000 --> 00:30:30.000
Jose Delgado: We had these men, Jana Scott and Susanna Scott. Right they they, they make connection broadcasting, live to my share.
00:30:30.000 --> 00:30:37.000
Jose Delgado: So Sundays at 10 Am. The morning we go live to England right with, with the mass of over my my password.
00:30:37.000 --> 00:30:39.000
Jose Delgado: And then um.
00:30:37.000 --> 00:30:43.000
Katherine Autin: Well, when I put the podcast up, if you'll make sure I have the links.
00:30:43.000 --> 00:30:52.000
Katherine Autin: And the information, I have your link for your podcast is it okay? If I share the information about how to get on your podcast? Or do you want them to contact you.
00:30:52.000 --> 00:30:55.000
Jose Delgado: Just put it. Yeah, just whatever you need.
00:30:54.000 --> 00:30:56.000
Katherine Autin: I mean, I'm sorry on your group.
00:30:56.000 --> 00:31:00.000
Jose Delgado: No, yes, whatever we need, Kathy. Whatever is easy for you.
00:31:00.000 --> 00:31:06.000
Jose Delgado: One more time. We are practicing awareness. So we need to. We cannot have a limitation with us. We need to be open. That idea.
00:31:06.000 --> 00:31:17.000
Jose Delgado: And then the other thing that I have, if you don't mind one second is um. Also we have a Sunday hour with Pastor key another pastor for England. It's an amazing. So we have. People can dedicate.
00:31:06.000 --> 00:31:08.000
Katherine Autin: Yeah.
00:31:13.000 --> 00:31:15.000
Katherine Autin: Uh-huh.
00:31:17.000 --> 00:31:25.000
Jose Delgado: Scripture message. So it really fun. So we are connected all the time. So we are not alone.
00:31:26.000 --> 00:31:31.000
Katherine Autin: You are, you are doing so much you inspire me. The more I talk to you, the more I'm like.
00:31:31.000 --> 00:31:33.000
Katherine Autin: How do you even do all this.
00:31:33.000 --> 00:31:36.000
Katherine Autin: It's amazing.
00:31:34.000 --> 00:31:39.000
Jose Delgado: And I have a lot of I have a lot more this year. We're gonna have um.
00:31:39.000 --> 00:31:41.000
Jose Delgado: Cooking with Parkinson.
00:31:41.000 --> 00:31:48.000
Katherine Autin: Well, the thing is, you really care, and you really want to be there and help people get not just educated, but get connected.
00:31:47.000 --> 00:31:49.000
Jose Delgado: Yes.
00:31:48.000 --> 00:31:52.000
Katherine Autin: So, you know I want to thank you so much for appearing as a guest on.
00:31:52.000 --> 00:32:04.000
Katherine Autin: My podcast um, this is our 4th episode. And Jose Julio Delgado, I want to thank you so much for attending and coming and telling your story because.
00:32:04.000 --> 00:32:11.000
Katherine Autin: I want people to be inspired, and to feel that they really are not alone. So I would encourage folks who have Parkinson's.
00:32:11.000 --> 00:32:17.000
Katherine Autin: Or their caregivers, or really anyone who wants to help and learn.
00:32:17.000 --> 00:32:23.000
Katherine Autin: I would encourage you to get on to Jose's group. I will put the link in the information.
00:32:23.000 --> 00:32:25.000
Katherine Autin: So that you can access it.
00:32:25.000 --> 00:32:27.000

Katherine Autin: And I just thank you so much, Jose. I.
00:32:29.000 --> 00:32:32.000

00:32:35.000 --> 00:32:37.000
Jose Delgado: Oh, yeah.
00:32:36.000 --> 00:32:39.000

Jose Delgado: So just keep keep it. Let's keep going. So.
00:32:51.000 --> 00:32:53.000
Jose Delgado: We can encounter the war.
00:32:52.000 --> 00:32:57.000
Katherine Autin: Well, I'm also going to be interviewing Ian from Saskatchewan.
00:32:57.000 --> 00:33:01.000
Katherine Autin: Cause. He's another Parkinson's person who inspires me so.
00:32:57.000 --> 00:32:59.000
